Nordic Semiconductor Acquires Neuton.AI to Bolster Edge AI Leadership

Nordic Semiconductor, a global leader in ultra-low-power wireless connectivity solutions, has announced the acquisition of the intellectual property and core technology assets of Neuton.AI, a pioneer in fully automated TinyML solutions for edge devices. This strategic move aims to usher in a new era of machine learning (ML) on the edge by integrating Nordic’s industry-leading nRF54 Series ultra-low power wireless SoCs with Neuton.AI’s revolutionary neural network framework. The synergy is expected to bring scalable, high-performance artificial intelligence (AI) to even the most resource-constrained devices.

Vegard Wollan, CEO and President at Nordic Semiconductor, highlighted this development as a “generational leap in embedded compute power and efficiency.” He emphasized that by combining Nordic’s established leadership in low-power wireless technology with Neuton.AI’s cutting-edge TinyML platform, developers will be empowered to create a new class of always-on, AI-powered devices that are faster, smaller, and significantly more power-efficient.

Neuton.AI’s patented technological breakthrough is centered on its fully automated platform, which is capable of generating ML models typically under 5 KB in size. This makes their models up to 10 times smaller and faster than alternative approaches. A key advantage of Neuton.AI’s platform is its exceptional ease of use, as these ultra-small models require no manual tuning or specialized data science expertise, facilitating rapid deployment across 8-, 16-, and 32-bit Microcontroller Units (MCUs). Through its innovative neural network framework, which automatically constructs ultra-small models without predefined architectures, Neuton.AI delivers accurate, energy-efficient, and fast AI for diverse edge applications, preserving critical device and system resources like power and code memory.

Oyvind Strom, EVP Short-Range at Nordic Semiconductor, articulated the powerful combination of Neuton.AI's advanced ML technology with the performance of Nordic's ultra-low power nRF54 Series, asserting that it will redefine possibilities in ultra-efficient machine learning applications. This collaboration is set to enable developers to build smarter, ultra-low-power devices that deliver true machine learning at the edge, not only for the nRF54 Series but across Nordic's entire portfolio of wireless connectivity SoCs, making embedded AI more accessible and scalable than ever before.

This acquisition comes at a crucial time as the demand for edge node intelligence rapidly accelerates. With TinyML chipset shipments projected to reach an impressive $5.9 billion by 2030, Nordic Semiconductor is strategically positioning itself to capitalize on this growing market. The company plans to offer developers a robust, ready-to-scale AI/ML toolkit for a wide range of applications. These include predictive maintenance, smart health monitoring, process automation, gesture recognition, next-generation consumer wearables, and various Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

The acquisition encompasses all intellectual property and selected assets of Neuton.AI, along with its performance-driven team of 13 highly skilled engineers and data scientists. During the initial integration phase, the Neuton.AI brand and platform will continue to operate, ensuring uninterrupted service for existing users and partners. While the financial terms of the transaction remain undisclosed, its completion is subject to customary regulatory approvals.
