No Deaths at OTC Branch, Quickmart Assures Public After Protest Chaos - Nairobi Wire

Quickmart Supermarket has said it is not true that many people died at its Nairobi CBD OTC store during the June 25 protests, calling these reports false and not based on fact.

On Thursday, the company put out a statement saying that two of its shops, one in central Nairobi and another in Ruiru, were broken into while the unrest was going on. But, the store was clear that no one died or got hurt at either place.

This need to clear things up came after posts on social media went viral, claiming that police found dead bodies at its OTC shop. These posts sparked more speculation after photos were shared showing cops at that store on Thursday.

Quickmart acted fast to calm people down, making sure Kenyans knew that all workers and shoppers were okay. The store said again how important safety is, noting that the safety of its team, the people who shop there, and the nearby areas is what matters most to them.

“Quickmart notes that two of our branches in OTC and Ruiru were affected during yesterday’s demonstrations,” the note stated

“Contrary to misleading information circulating on digital platforms, we wish to assure the public that no staff, customers, or any other individuals were injured or deceased at the two outlets.”

After the break-ins, the company said it was already fixing things to open again. At the same time, Quickmart told customers of the two branches to use their closest other store until things are back to normal.
