British boxing superstar Anthony Joshua has heaped glowing praise on Ghana following his visit for the Legacy Rise Sports: Battle of the Beasts event.

In doing so, he also called out what he now sees as misleading narratives from his Nigerian counterparts.

Speaking during a courtesy call on President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House on Monday, June 16, 2025, the two-time unified heavyweight champion expressed his surprise and admiration for Ghana, revealing that the trip wasn’t originally part of his plans due to impressions he had formed back home.

“Coming to Ghana actually wasn’t on my agenda. Because, for some reason, everyone in Nigeria puts Nigeria above Ghana. But I’m now here and I’m looking around like, they’ve been lying to me,” he said.

Joshua’s remarks drew laughter and applause from those in the room, many of whom have followed his journey since he arrived in Accra on Friday, June 13, 2025.

The British-Nigerian boxer has engaged in a variety of activities since landing, from public appearances to private courtesy calls, all as part of his involvement in the Battle of the Beasts boxing event, led by Sharaf Mahama.

Deeply moved by his experience, Joshua went on to lavish praise on Ghana’s people, infrastructure, and rich heritage.

“I’m impressed with your beautiful country, amazing culture, hospitality, the airport, the organisation, and I can’t wait to go back and tell everyone across the world how beautiful this place is,” he added.
