Nigerian Police Confirm Officer's Death In Anambra From Accidental Discharge By 10-Year-Old Son | Sahara Reporters

Previously, SaharaReporters exclusively reported that Inspector Amechi had been shot dead by his 10-year-old son in an accidental discharge incident while on duty at a bank in Awka, Anambra State.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that the tragic death of Police Inspector Okolie Amechi was caused by an accidental discharge from his service rifle, allegedly triggered by his 10-year-old son.

Previously, SaharaReporters exclusively reported that Inspector Amechi had been shot dead by his 10-year-old son in an accidental discharge incident while on duty at a bank in Awka, Anambra State.

SaharaReporters had reported that the incident occurred around 9:40 p.m. on Sunday while the officer was on duty at Polaris Bank, located along Zik Avenue by Okeke Street in Awka.

In an official statement on Monday issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command expressed deep sorrow over the loss of one of its officers.

"The Anambra State Police Command has expressed sadness over the unfortunate incident that resulted in the death of Police Inspector Okolie Amechi in Awka."

The incident reportedly occurred on the evening of June 15, 2025, at the Inspector’s residence, where his 10-year-old son unintentionally fired a shot from the officer's AK-47 rifle.

"The incident, which occurred on the evening of June 15, 2025, was allegedly due to an accidental discharge by his 10-year-old son."

"The son unaware of the state of the AK 47 rifle assigned to the Inspector, pulled the trigger and struck the Inspector on the back and his second child on the hand."

Inspector Amechi was quickly rushed to the hospital but sadly did not survive.

"Regrettably, Inspector Amechi was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty at the hospital, while the second victim was said to be responding to treatment. Meanwhile, the AK47 rifle has been recovered while the remains of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue."

While describing the incident as tragic and painful, SP Tochukwu Ikenga noted that the Command was standing by the bereaved family in their time of grief.

"The Command while wishing the second victim a quick recovery, condoles with the family and friends of the late Inspector."
