Nigerian Government Initiates Preparations and Forms Committee for 2025 Democracy Day

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially inaugurated an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) tasked with the significant responsibility of planning and executing a memorable and befitting 2025 Democracy Day Celebration. The announcement of the committee's formation and its mandate was made in a statement released on Thursday by Mr Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF). The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, serves as the Chairman of this crucial committee. During the inauguration, Senator Akume was represented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.

Senator Akume, through Minister Bagudu, emphasized the profound importance of commemorating Democracy Day. He noted that the anniversary serves as a vital opportunity to reflect on the immense contributions and sacrifices made by Nigeria's national heroes and founding fathers who valiantly fought for the democratic dispensation and independence the country now enjoys. He stated, "This year’s Democracy Day Celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices of our founding fathers to attain independence for our dear nation and to retrospect on the daunting challenges and trauma that other democratic champions faced in their collective efforts to wrest power from the grip of military dictatorship. To celebrate this day in their remembrance is to honour and recognise their place in history." Furthermore, the SGF highlighted that the annual Democracy Day Celebration provides the government with an avenue to showcase its achievements and present its scorecard to the Nigerian populace, reaffirming its commitment to democratic ideals.

In line with the current administration's objectives, Senator Akume urged the newly inaugurated committee members to work collaboratively and in synergy with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to realize the Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming for a better Nigeria. This call underscores the expectation that the celebration will not only be commemorative but also reflective of the government's ongoing efforts and future aspirations.

A series of activities have been proposed for the 2025 Democracy Day celebration, spanning several days. The schedule includes a World Press Briefing on Friday, June 6, 2025, followed by a Special Juma’at Service on the same day. A Church Service is planned for Sunday, June 8, 2025. A Youth Programme is scheduled for Tuesday, June 9, 2025, and a Public Lecture will take place on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. The celebration will culminate on Thursday, June 12, 2025, with a Presidential Broadcast and a ceremonial Parade.

The 14-man Inter-Ministerial Committee is composed of high-ranking government officials. Chaired by SGF Senator George Akume, its members include: Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy; Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation; Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning; Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT); Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior; Hadiza Bala-Usman, Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination; Kayode Egbetokun, Inspector-General of Police; Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, Director-General of the Department of State Services; Brigadier General Adebisi Onasanya, Commander of the Guards Brigade; Dr. Nnamdi Mbaeri, Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, OSGF; Kachollom Daju, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health; and Engr. Nadungu Gagare, Permanent Secretary, Political and Economic Affairs Office (OSGF), who will also serve as Member/Secretary to the committee.

The Terms of Reference (ToR) for the committee are clearly defined to guide its operations.
