Nigeria: London Mayor Strengthens Fintech and Innovation Ties During Historic Lagos Visit
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has concluded a landmark visit to Lagos, aimed at deepening UK-Nigeria relations through strategic partnerships in fintech, enterprise technology, and the creative economy.
Marking the first official visit by a sitting London mayor to sub-Saharan Africa, the mission underscores London’s commitment to inclusive growth, digital transformation, and cross-cultural collaboration. The visit was supported by London & Partners, the city’s growth agency, and led by Deputy Mayor for Business and Growth, Howard Dawber.
Mayor Khan was accompanied by a high-level trade delegation comprising 27 London-based firms with expertise spanning fintech, sustainability, and innovation. The group engaged with key Nigerian stakeholders—including government officials, investors, and creative leaders—to explore bilateral investment opportunities and foster economic synergies.
“Africa has the world’s fastest-growing population and is experiencing rapid economic expansion. There is significant potential to deepen collaboration between Africa and London across vital sectors such as finance, education, health, sustainability, and tech,” Khan stated.
In Lagos, Khan participated in a keynote panel at the “Bridging Borders: How London and Lagos Can Shape the Future of Global Tech” event, where he highlighted the complementary roles of both cities in driving global innovation. He also encouraged Nigerian startups to consider London as a hub for scaling and investment.
“Londoners of African descent have played a pivotal role in shaping the city’s identity, and this visit is a celebration of our shared heritage and an opportunity to build a more equitable future together,” he added.
Lagos has emerged as the leading fintech hub in Africa, hosting over 500 active fintech startups—more than double the number of its closest African counterpart—according to data from StartupList Africa. The city’s influence spans funding, policy leadership, and global recognition.
British Deputy High Commissioner in Lagos, Jonny Baxter, noted that the visit reflects the UK government’s broader commitment to economic and cultural cooperation. “From fintech to fashion, the UK-Nigeria partnership continues to drive innovation and growth. Through the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership, we are unlocking opportunities that benefit both economies,” he said.
UK Minister for Africa, Lord Collins of Highbury, described the visit as a strong signal of the UK’s intent to strengthen long-term partnerships across the continent. “Fostering trade, investment, and cultural links is essential not just for economic growth but for building enduring partnerships based on mutual respect and shared prosperity.”
Mayor Khan’s African trade mission will continue with stops in Accra, Johannesburg, and Cape Town to further promote London as a global destination for investment, collaboration, and cultural exchange.
