The Nalerigu District Court in the North East Region has ordered the remand of Waliu Fazazi, a suspect allegedly involved in a mobile money robbery incident at Bunkpurugu.

According to police reports, the incident occurred on April 23, 2025, when Fazazi and his accomplices – who remain at large – robbed a mobile money vendor of GH₵300,000.

Investigations revealed that Fazazi had approached the vendor under false pretences, claiming he wanted to withdraw GH₵15,000, which he said was a delayed transfer from his brother.

During the transaction, two masked men suddenly appeared, one of them armed.

They demanded the vendor's bag containing the cash, fired warning shots, and escaped on a motorbike.

Fazazi was arraigned before the court on April 25, 2025, and has been remanded into custody while police continue their manhunt for the other suspects.

The case has been adjourned to May 9, 2025. Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects.

In a separate development, telecommunications giant MTN Group has confirmed a cybersecurity breach that resulted in unauthorised access to customer data in some of its operating markets.

In a statement issued on April 24, 2025, the company revealed that an unknown third party had gained access to parts of its systems, though it did not disclose the specific affected countries.

MTN has moved to reassure customers that its core systems and financial platforms, including mobile money services, remain secure and uncompromised.

The company stated there is currently no evidence that customer accounts or MoMo wallets have been directly affected by the breach.

"Our critical infrastructure, including core networks and billing systems, continues to operate normally."

Investigations into the breach are ongoing as the company works to determine the full extent of the incident.
