The University of the Southwest’s head women’s basketball coach Steven Barker will take on double duty next season, also stepping in as the head coach of the Mustangs men’s basketball team. Barker, who took over the women’s team last season, will replace James Voight, who had been the men’s coach since 2021.

Prior to his time at USW, Barker served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Seminole State (2020-2022), an assistant men’s coach at Mayville State (2022-2023) and as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Talladega College (2023-2024). He led the Mustangs WBB team to a 14-15 (10-14 RRAC) record this past season.

Barker told HoopDirt,  “I want to Thank University of The Southwest and Administration for supporting me. Our President Dr. Ryan Tipton, administrators Paula Smith, Amanda Guzman-Appel, Veronica Torrez, our Athletic Director Steve Appel, and all of the faculty and staff who I work with daily. We hope to continue to add to the overall athletic department’s success. The community of Hobbs and The State of New Mexico are just full of amazing hard working, genuine people. I am extremely blessed to be apart of such a special place.”
