MS Dhoni Inducted into ICC Cricket Hall of Fame

MS Dhoni, India’s celebrated World Cup-winning captain, has been formally inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame during a ceremony in London, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious cricketing career. Dhoni is the 11th Indian cricketer to receive this prestigious honour, which acknowledges cricket legends who have made substantial contributions to the sport's rich history. Players become eligible for induction five years after their last international match.

Dhoni's captaincy is legendary, having led India to victory in the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup with a young team, captained the Men in Blue to a memorable home win in the 2011 ODI World Cup, and secured the Champions Trophy in 2013. He remains the only captain in history to have won all three major ICC white-ball trophies. Known for his calm demeanor and exceptional leadership, Dhoni consistently turned pressure into opportunities and aspirations into achievements.

As a player, Dhoni revolutionized the role of the ODI finisher. His unbeaten 183 against Sri Lanka in 2005 remains the highest individual score by a wicketkeeper in ODIs. He amassed over 10,000 ODI runs at an impressive average of 50.57, cementing a profound and lasting batting legacy. Behind the stumps, Dhoni was equally exceptional, redefining wicketkeeping in limited-overs cricket with his lightning-fast stumpings and sharp anticipation. His unconventional style consistently yielded extraordinary results.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri paid a witty and heartfelt tribute, remarking on Dhoni's quick hands: "He had hands faster than that of a pickpocket. If you're ever in India, going for a big game, especially in Ahmedabad, you don't want MS behind you; watch that back. The wallet will disappear." Shastri also highlighted Dhoni's unwavering composure, stating, "He gets out for zero, he wins the World Cup, he gets a hundred the same, two hundred the same. There is absolutely, you know, no difference."

Reflecting on this recognition, MS Dhoni expressed his gratitude: "It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognizes the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world. To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling--something I will cherish forever."

ICC Chairman Jay Shah commented on the significance of the Hall of Fame: "Through the ICC Hall of Fame, we pay tribute to the finest players the game has seen--individuals whose remarkable careers have shaped cricket's legacy and inspired generations." He added, "This year, we are privileged to induct seven truly outstanding individuals into this prestigious group. On behalf of the ICC, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to each of them and hope they cherish this well-deserved recognition as a defining moment in their cricketing journey."

Established in January 2009 during the ICC’s centenary celebrations, the Hall of Fame has consistently recognized the sport’s greatest talents. Alongside MS Dhoni, the ICC Hall of Fame Class of 2025 includes Hashim Amla, Matthew Hayden, Graeme Smith, Daniel Vettori, Sana Mir, and Sarah Taylor.

Dhoni's stellar career includes 17,266 international runs and 829 dismissals across 538 matches for India. He is widely regarded as one of the finest wicketkeeper-captains the sport has ever witnessed.
