Meta updates 'Friends' tab to prioritize connections

Meta has launched a new feature on Facebook called the ‘Friends’ tab, designed to provide users with a dedicated space to view content exclusively from their friends. This update allows users to bypass algorithm-driven recommendations and focus solely on updates from their social circle. The feature is currently rolling out in the United States and Canada.
The Friends tab displays posts, stories, reels, and other updates shared by your friends. Unlike the main feed, which incorporates AI-curated content, the Friends tab offers a distraction-free experience centered around personal connections. According to Meta, the tab will showcase "your friends’ stories, reels, posts, birthdays, and friend requests.”
Accessing the Friends Tab
The new tab can be found in the navigation bar on the Home feed and within the Bookmarks section of the Facebook app. For quick access, users can pin the tab:
- Tap your profile picture in the Home feed.
- Select Settings & Privacy > Settings > Tab bar.
- Choose Friends and pin the tab.
Meta has been actively experimenting with various features to enhance user engagement. Recent tests have included the introduction of Local and Explore tabs, which highlight content from Reels, Marketplace, Groups, and Events. The company has also been exploring AI-generated features such as Comment Summaries and Messenger Communities.
The introduction of the Friends tab reflects Meta's ongoing efforts to refine the Facebook experience and provide users with more control over the content they see. By prioritizing content from friends, Meta aims to foster more meaningful interactions and strengthen personal connections on the platform.
