Meta AI Rolls Out New Generative Video Editing Features

Meta has announced the introduction of new artificial intelligence (AI) video editing capabilities to its Meta AI platform. This development allows users to edit short videos using a range of preset AI prompts. The company stated that these features were inspired by its advanced Movie Gen AI models and aims to provide users with creative tools for video enhancement.

Initially, users will have access to 50 preset options to edit video clips up to 10 seconds in length. These presets, designed with feedback from creators, can transform various aspects of a video, such as outfits, settings, and overall visual styles. Examples include applying a "vintage comic book style," simulating rainy day lighting, changing a subject's attire to a space cadet suit, or making the video appear as if it was shot in a desert or in an animated style. Users can even add a Tuxedo to a person in the video.

The new AI video editing tools are being rolled out on the Meta AI app, the Meta.ai website, and Meta's standalone video-editing app, Edits, which serves as an alternative to popular apps like CapCut. The initial launch is available to users in the United States and more than a dozen other select countries, though specific availability in regions like India is yet to be confirmed. Meta has indicated that this feature will be free for a limited time.

While the current system relies on presets, Meta plans to introduce more customization options later this year. This future update is expected to include the ability for users to "edit videos alongside Meta AI with your own text prompts," allowing for more precise and personalized video edits. This capability is based on the same Movie Gen AI model that Instagram Head Adam Mosseri previously teased, where he demonstrated changing video elements via text prompts.

This expansion into video editing builds upon Meta AI's existing image generation features, which are already integrated across several of Meta's platforms. By offering these new video tools, Meta aims to attract more content creators to its ecosystem, encouraging them to use Meta's native tools rather than relying on third-party applications. This strategic move places Meta in direct competition with rivals such as Google, which has also been introducing generative AI video features, and other specialized editing platforms like Captions.

Meta emphasized its goal in developing these tools: "We built this ... so that everyone can experiment creatively and make fun, interesting videos to share with their friends, family, and followers." The company believes these tools will make video editing simpler, more creative, and accessible to a broader audience, empowering both casual users and professional creators. Edited videos can be shared directly across Meta's major platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, and to the Discover feed in the Meta AI app and website. The initiative reflects a broader industry trend where technology companies are racing to incorporate generative AI into their platforms to meet the increasing demand for advanced content creation tools, especially as short-form video continues to dominate social media engagement.
