Met predicts heavier, more frequent showers today
Kolkata: Even as the city received consistent rain on Saturday, more heavy showers could drench Kolkata on Sunday, said the Met office. A cyclonic circulation set to form on Sunday and turn into a low-pressure system could lead to ‘heavy rain' in Kolkata and its surrounding districts.
The rain could continue in the western districts of Bengal on Monday, though the city will continue to receive intermittent rain.Kolkata received 18.9 mm of rain on Saturday, when the maximum temperature dropped to 28.6°C, four notches below normal. The difference between maximum and minimum temperatures narrowed down to just two degrees, with the latter clocking 26.5°C. The mercury will now remain below 30°C, said weathermen."We expect heavier and more frequent showers in Kolkata on Sunday as the circulation takes shape and develops into a low-pressure. The rains could lose intensity on Monday but will continue since the monsoon trough is now active in south Bengal," said Regional Meteorological Centre weather scientist H R Biswas.
A bulletin issued by the RMC said: "An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over southwest Bangladesh and adjoining gangetic West Bengal.
Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal Bangladesh and West Bengal during the next 48 hours. Subsequently, it is likely to move slowly west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal and north Odisha and Jharkhand.
"The east-west trough runs from the upper air cyclonic circulation over southwest Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal to northeast Madhya Pradesh across Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh between 3.1 and 4.5 km above mean sea level, the bulletin added. Under their influence, light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely in some districts of West Bengal.
