McDan urges professionals to prioritise attitude over skill for career longevity

In a reflective post shared on his Facebook page, Dr McKorley explained that many professionals fail to advance not due to a lack of ability, but because of limiting mindsets and poor interpersonal conduct.

"Your skill can get you any job, but your attitude will determine how long you keep it," he stated, adding that he has personally witnessed talented individuals stagnate in their careers due to "feelings of entitlement, arrogance, or an unwillingness to take responsibility and accept feedback."

He lamented the waste of potential that often results from such traits, noting that “these attitudes hinder growth far more than a lack of skill.”

Dr McKorley further noted that technical expertise alone is no longer enough to sustain success in today’s workplaces. “No one wants to work alongside someone who is gifted yet difficult. Nobody wants to work with someone who is an expert yet problematic,” he said, stressing that workplace relationships are built on collaboration, humility and emotional intelligence.

According to him, promotions often favour those who are dependable, teachable, and emotionally intelligent—not just the most intelligent. “Promotions go to those who not only shine in their expertise but also demonstrate trustworthiness,” he said.

He encouraged professionals to assess whether they take initiative, are open to learning, and easy to work with, pointing out that these traits contribute to a healthy work environment and long-term career value.

“While talent may initially catch attention, it’s your attitude that keeps you connected and valued in the long run,” Dr McKorley advised. He concluded with a call for individuals to actively invest in their attitude, treating it with the same care as any vital life skill. “This is how you can build a fulfilling and enduring career,” he noted.
