Kylian Mbappe has equaled Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal record from his debut season at Real Madrid, netting his 33rd goal of the campaign in Los Blancos’ 3-2 victory over Leganes on Saturday.

The French superstar scored twice in the match, bringing Real Madrid level on points with Barcelona in the La Liga title race. In the process, Mbappe matched Ronaldo’s first-season haul of 33 goals, achieved after the Portuguese legend joined Madrid from Manchester United in 2009.

While equaling Ronaldo’s debut-season tally is a remarkable feat, Mbappe still has a long way to go to match Ronaldo’s highest-scoring season. The Portuguese icon set a club-record 61 goals in all competitions during the 2014-15 campaign.

Additionally, Mbappe is just four goals away from surpassing Ivan Zamorano’s record for the best-ever debut season in Real Madrid history. The Chilean striker scored 37 goals in the 1992-93 campaign.

Speaking after the game, Mbappe expressed his excitement about reaching Ronaldo’s milestone:

“Very special. The most important thing is what we achieve as a team, but scoring the same number of goals as Cristiano is always good. We know what he means to Real Madrid and to me. He gives me a lot of advice; he’s scored a lot of goals, but we have to win titles here.”

Mbappe currently leads the La Liga goal charts for 2025, having scored 12 goals this year alone. His closest competitor, Robert Lewandowski of Barcelona, has seven goals in the same period.

Mbappe could surpass Ronaldo’s debut-season tally in Madrid’s upcoming Copa del Rey quarter-final second leg against Real Sociedad. Carlo Ancelotti’s side leads 1-0 from the first leg, and another Mbappe goal would put him ahead of Ronaldo’s record in fewer games.
