Matawalle, CDS Musa Visit Maiduguri To Bolster Fight Against Insurgency
The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammad Matawalle, alongside the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, on Friday undertook a high-level operational visit to Maiduguri, Borno State, to assess the ongoing counter-insurgency operations under Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK).
According to a statement by the minister’s media aide, Ahmad Dan Wudil, the visit aims to appraise the operational readiness of the troops, boost the morale of personnel on the frontlines, and review strategies to restore enduring peace and stability across the North East.
The statement reaffirmed the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, amid renewed threats from terrorist groups.
The visit comes against the backdrop of rising concerns over resurging attacks by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements in parts of Borno State.
Earlier this month, Governor Babagana Zulum raised the alarm over the deteriorating security situation, revealing that insurgents had overrun military formations in Wulgo, Wajiroko, and Sabon Gari communities.
He called on the federal government and security agencies to urgently intervene to prevent a reversal of hard-won gains in the fight against insurgency.
“While we appreciate the tremendous support from the federal government and the military, the current shift in focus away from the North East risks undermining our progress,” Governor Zulum warned, stressing the need for renewed and decisive action.
Dr. Matawalle’s visit, alongside the military top brass, signals a renewed determination by the federal government to confront the growing threats and reassure residents and displaced communities of the government’s commitment to their safety.
Operation HADIN KAI continues to serve as a critical pillar in Nigeria’s broader strategy to eradicate insurgency and stabilize the North East region.
