Published 1 week ago1 minute read

A follower of the Orogunmeji masquerade in Ikirun, Ifelodun Local Council of Osun State, has died after an alleged shooting by a member of the Osun State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps.

The victim, identified as Abiodun, was reportedly shot on Monday, May 6, 2025, during a confrontation between the masquerade’s followers and operatives of the security agency.

The Guardian learnt that the security operatives had been deployed to provide protection during the masquerade’s procession in the town. Eyewitnesses claimed the altercation began when some individuals celebrating the masquerade allegedly tried to seize a rifle from an Amotekun agent. The ensuing scuffle led to an accidental discharge, with the bullet striking Abiodun in the leg.

Although Abiodun was rushed to a hospital, efforts to save his life were unsuccessful, and he passed away the following day. Confirming the incident yesterday, spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed that the head of the Orogunmeji masquerade team had been invited for questioning.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of Osun Amotekun, Yusuf Abass, stated he would provide further details but had not done so as of press time.
