Marvel's PlayStation Game at State of Play Looks Great, But Unexpected

Published 20 hours ago3 minute read

surprised a lot of gamers who tuned into June 4's Sony State of Play. The Marvel-inspired fighting title is an exciting addition to the genre, but the confirmation of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls also raises a lot of questions about the rest of Marvel's gaming roster.

Beyond Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is also set for a 2026 launch, and there's a very real chance that even more Marvel games are on next year's release calendar. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls looks great, but it also wouldn't be surprising if its reveal left a lot of Marvel fans with a pang of disappointment. The game itself is a welcome inclusion to the growing Marvel games roster, but it makes the absence of Marvel's Wolverine even more apparent.

Why an Update on Marvel's Blade is More Important Than Ever

With the delays and cancellations of other Blade content and Marvel media, an update on Marvel's Blade can restore the hope of fans.

So far, the only look gamers have gotten at Marvel's Wolverine was due to the unfortunate leaks that plagued Insomniac back in 2023. These notorious leaks revealed gameplay, the game's setting, and even plot points, and since then, Insomniac hasn't revealed any official details beyond what was revealed in the invasive company breach. There are high expectations for Marvel's Wolverine, so it makes perfect sense as to why Insomniac would want to keep details as locked away as possible, especially after the leaks.

There is even the real possibility that Insomniac went back to the drawing board after the past leaks in order to keep players surprised, but it's unclear. After the success of Marvel's Spider-Man, Insomniac's second attempt at adapting a beloved Marvel character brings forth even more hype, but the lack of news can also be disheartening.

Cliffhanger Games' Black Panther project was unfortunately canceled by EA.

Of course, this is purely speculation, but if Marvel's Wolverine were going to be announced at any major gaming event, The Game Awards would be the most obvious choice. Every year, the awards show features plenty of surprises and long-awaited updates, and it could provide Insomniac with the perfect opportunity to reignite hype for the project. The wait for Marvel's Wolverine may still be ongoing, but there has at least been recent confirmation that the game is still alive and well.

Back in April, Insomniac replied to a fan's inquiry about Marvel's Wolverine on Twitter, stating, "We're actively working on Marvel's Wolverine for PS5. We'll share news about the game when we are ready to share it. That will always be our answer." This may not be as exciting as a gameplay reveal for Marvel's Wolverine, but it at least serves as a small promise that the game is on the way.

In Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, players can participate in 4v4 matches. Confirmed characters include Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Storm, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, and Ghost Rider.

It may not be the Marvel's Wolverine news that a lot of gamers were hoping for, but Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is still a promising title for both Marvel and fighting fans to look forward to. Superhero video games are gearing up to give gamers a treasure trove of options, and once Marvel's Wolverine's release date is finally solidified, it will add to a growing list of comic book games to keep an eye on.
