Mandela demands legal action against Afrikaners granted U.S. asylum

Mayibuye Melisizwe Mandela, a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and great-grandson of Nelson Mandela, has called for treason charges against Afrikaners granted refugee status in the United States.

Mandela, chair of the Melisizwe Mandela Foundation, also demands the revocation of their South African citizenship, accusing them of fabricating claims of persecution to justify their resettlement.

The controversy stems from a February 2025 executive order by US President Donald Trump, which fast-tracked refugee status for 49 Afrikaners, citing alleged land seizures and racial violence in South Africa.

Mandela and South African officials, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, have rejected these claims as a false narrative of “white genocide.” Ramaphosa labeled the refugees “cowards,” while Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni emphasized that police statistics show no evidence of systemic violence against Afrikaners, undermining their eligibility under the 1951 Refugee Convention.

Mandela’s foundation is reportedly preparing a legal case against the group, arguing their actions defame South Africa’s image.
