Magnolia trades Abueva, Balanza to NorthPort for Navarro

Published 1 week ago3 minute read

CALVIN Abueva’s days with Magnolia are over.

The eccentric forward was included by the Hotshots in a package sent to the Northport Batang Pier so they can get their hands on rising big man William Navarro.

Also part of the Magnolia package was second-string forward Jerick Balanza and the Hotshots’ second-round pick in the Season 51 draft.

The trade was approved by the PBA Commissioner’s Office on Tuesday, formally marking the end of Abueva's four-year stay with Magnolia after coming in via trade from Phoenix in 2021 for Chris Banchero, a first-round pick and a second-rounder.

At 37, the 'Beast' is restarting his career with the fourth team of a colorful and often tumultuous 13-year PBA career that started in 2012 after he was picked in the first round at second overall by Alaska in the draft behind June Mar Fajardo.

On the other hand, Navarro is one of the brightest young stars in the pro league and should be a major addition to the frontline of Magnolia, which currently lords it over the Philippine Cup leaderboard with a 7-1 (win-loss) record.

Navarro is also the second NorthPort player to be acquired by Magnolia in a trade over the last 10 months after Zavier Lucero, who was acquired by the Hotshots in a July 2024 trade in exchange for Jio Jalalon and Abu Tratter.

Oddly, Balanza has been with NorthPort before after he was traded by Ginebra to the Batang Pier to facilitate a swap of picks in the 2021 draft.

Abueva won a Best Player of the Conference award right in his first stint with the Hotshots, but failed to bring the franchise a championship as the team could only manage a pair of runner up honors during the 2021 Philippine Cup and 2024 Commissioner’s Cup.

The trade also meant parting ways with Abueva’s close friend Ian Sangalang, who was his teammate at San Sebastian in college where they won the Stags’ last NCAA men’s basketball championship in 2009.

The do-it-all Navarro is expected to play a major role in the Hotshots’ bid to end a seven-year title drought after the team was the first to make the quarterfinals of the season-ending conference.

The former Ateneo standout has been solid for the Batang Pier in the ongoing Philippine Cup as he’s showing the way for the team together with Joshua Munzon in the absence of injured main man Arvin Tolentino.

Northport however, is down in the standings with a 1-6 record.
