Lucero parents in town to finally see Zavier play in PBA

MAGNOLIA big man Zavier Lucero's biggest supporters are currently in town.

The parents of the Fil-Am sophomore have been in the country for almost two weeks now to watch their promising son play in person for the Hotshots.

They managed to see him in action in Magnolia’s last two outings against Northport and Barangay Ginebra, including travelling all the way to Candon, Ilocos Sur.

“From the airport, nagbiyahe sila straight to Candon para mapanood is Zav,” said long-time Magnolia team liason Jojo Peralta.

Such effort is truly appreciated by the 6-foot-6 sophomore.

“It’s good. It’s great to have them at the game,” said Lucero when asked about his parents.

It was the first time his Filipina mother watched him play in the PBA Philippine Cup, while his father was able to watch him during his time with Northport.

Going out of their way to watch their son play in faraway Ilocos Sur is just one of their many ways to show support to the burgeoning PBA career of Lucero.

The Magnolia center recalled how back in the US, his mom and dad would always watch his games on television even in the wee hours of the morning.

“They’re always supportive. They get up and watch every game. And the game’s at 3 a.m. or 4:30 a.m. So they’ve been my biggest supporters for sure,” said the former University of the Philippines star.

Lucero and the Hotshots managed to pull off a 106-97 win over Northport in Candon City where he paced Magnolia with 20 points, eight rebounds, and two assists.

But the Hotshots lost an 85-81 heartbreaker to Ginebra in a game where they led by as many as 10 in the fourth quarter. Lucero shared scoring honors with Ian Sangalang with 16 points while adding eight rebounds.

The Lucero couple sat behind the Magnolia bench, with his mother even wearing his son’s No. 22 Magnolia blue jersey while animatedly cheering him on.

“It’s better to have them here in person, so I can spend quality time with them outside of the basketball court,” said Zavier.

Lucero’s mother is staying in the country for another week, while his father will extend his stay a little longer, perhaps to see him in action in the playoffs.
