Los Angeles Fire Department Spokesperson Adam VanGerpen told reporters “somebody had lost consciousness inside the vehicle,” saying the car, a Nissan Versa, ran into a large group of people outside a club in East Hollywood.

The driver of the vehicle was attacked after ramming into the crowd and was later found to have sustained a gunshot injury from a suspect who fled the scene, the Associated Press reported, citing a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson who said it was not immediately clear if the driver was shot before or after the crash.

LAPD is still searching for the suspected gunman, who fled the scene on foot.

LAFD said in a 7:20 a.m. EDT update that 124 fire personnel responded to the scene in which seven were left in critical condition and six in serious condition.

Out of the 30 people injured, 23 were taken to hospital for medical treatment, according to LAPD.

People inside the club came outside to assist the injured before first responders arrived, VanGerpen added.

The condition of the driver has not yet been disclosed as of Saturday morning.

The club where the incident occurred, the Vermont, is a 13,000-square-foot live music venue that can hold around 1,200 people. The club was hosting a reggaeton and hip-hop event at the time of the incident, according to its Instagram page.

The incident comes after three Los Angeles deputies were killed Friday in a “critical workplace incident” that occurred at a training center home to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad. An explosion occurred on site as a bomb squad was moving an explosive device found in Santa Monica on Thursday. The investigation of the incident could possibly take months, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna told reporters.
