Published 4 hours ago2 minute read

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for most of Long Island for Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening, citing ozone levels above 100 Monday and temperatures expected to reach the mid-90s on Tuesday.

The heat advisory, which now includes northeastern Suffolk County as well as all of Nassau County, will be in effect from noon Monday to 8 p.m. Tuesday. The heat index values will reach as high as 96 on Monday, the service said.

An air quality alert was also issued for Long Island on Monday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., as the air quality index value will be greater than 100 of ground level ozone pollutants, forecasters said.

Tuesday will reach a high of 93 but have heat index values as high as 99, the service said.

The extreme heat may persist through Wednesday, but the service forecasts temperatures to be cooler Thursday to Friday.
