Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle: Fan writer on Carabao Cup final win
No one ever plays well at Wembley.
That's what I was telling my friends just hours before Newcastle took on Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final.
The Magpies subverted that with 99% of their performance against the Reds, Dan Burn's powerful header rewarding a dominant first half and Alexander Isak then doing what he does best.
Even if Federico Chiesa's late effort set up a tense finale, Newcastle were the better team on the day. To the corner we went with some classic Callum Wilson 'housery' and the job was done, after 10 minutes of agonising added time.
It's safe to say that in the sheer stress of seeing out those final stages, I've lost fingernails and possibly years from my life but at Newcastle United, we never make it easy.
Hopefully this can be the first domino that falls and success will continue to come to this club.
Seventy years of waiting and the clock has been reset.
We are Newcastle United and we are here to compete.
