Diddy Trial: How the "Racketeering Conspiracy" charge could play out

• The jury in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ federal sex-trafficking trial has been dismissed, and the trial will resume on Tuesday. The judge gave the jury strict instructions to avoid any and all conversations and media coverage about the case over the long Memorial Day weekend.

RapperKid Cudi — who had a brief relationship with Cassie Ventura — testified about his interactions with Combs. Ventura testified last week that she endured physical and sexual abuse from Combs and detailed how he orchestrated drug-fueled sex performances called “Freak Offs.”

• Combs has pleaded not guilty to charges that include racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to life in prison.

: If you or someone you know is struggling with intimate partner violence, there are resources available, including the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

The jury in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ racketeering and sex-trafficking trial has heard testimony from16 witnesses so far.

Here’s what they said and what the jury saw after lunch today:

The trial has been adjourned and will resume Tuesday morning.

Prosecutor Maurene Comey said the first witness they’ll call on Tuesday will be former Sean “Diddy” Combs’ employee Capricorn Clark.

After Clark, prosecutors plan to have witnesses from the Los Angeles Police Department and Los Angeles Fire Department. Comey said the prosecution’s case is running on time.

The jury is dismissed, and the trial will continue on Tuesday. Court is dark tomorrow and Monday for the Memorial Day holiday.

Judge Arun Subramanian gave the jury strict instructions to avoid any and all conversations and media coverage about the case over the holiday weekend.

Prosecutors have finished their direct-examination of Joshua Croft, a computer forensics agent with Homeland Security Investigations.

Defense attorney Teny Geragos is now asking him questions on cross-examination.

During cross-examination, Croft confirmed that Cassie Ventura gave the government consent to search the laptops. He said that he did not do a full review of the data.

Joshua Croft testifies at Sean "Diddy" Combs' trial in New York on Thursday.

Joshua Croft, a computer forensics agent with Homeland Security Investigations, testified that he extracted data from three of Cassie Ventura’s laptops.

He said one of the laptops had been set to factory default, and another opened to a log-in screen with user profiles for “Frank Black” and a guest profile.

Former Sean “Diddy” Combs executive assistant George Kaplan previously testified that hotel rooms were usually reserved under the name “Frank Black,” which was a reference to the late rapper and Bad Boy Records artist Notorious B.I.G., who had a nickname of “Frank White.”

The third laptop, which had some dents and bends, would not power on, he said.

Rapper Kid Cudi’s testimony that his car was blown up in his driveway while he was dating Cassie Ventura did not prove Sean “Diddy” Combs was behind the arson, defense attorney and CNN legal expert Misty Marris said.

In the cross examination of Kid Cudi, defense attorneys were able to cast doubt on claims that Combs and his co-conspirators were involved in the car fire, Marris said.

“The defense did some damage on cross-examination,” Marris said. “Because there was no direct evidence that Combs was involved. There was never an arrest. There was never a prosecution relating to that incident.”

Marris said Kid Cudi testified that he never saw who blew his car up or had any direct information about it.

“He just believed it to be Combs because he thought Combs was quote ‘violent,’” Marris said.

The arson incident, legal experts say, is a key piece of the prosecution’s argument that Combs ran a criminal enterprise consisting of violent behavior, sex trafficking and the procurement of narcotics. Combs has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The government has called Joshua Croft to the stand. He is a computer forensics agent working for Homeland Security Investigations.

Assistant US Attorney Emily Johnson is questioning him.

Croft is the 16th witness called by the prosecution.

Remember: Homeland Security Investigations searched Sean “Diddy” Combs’ homes in Los Angeles and Miami Beach in March 2024, and HSI arrested Combs in September in New York.

Direct examination is finished. The defense declined to cross-examine Frederic Zemmour, the general manager at the L’Ermitage Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

The jury just notes associated with the hotel profile associated with Sean “Diddy” Combs.

Those notes include:

The jury was shown hotel records for a profile that was initially created under the name Sean Combs in December 2006.

The name on the profile was changed to Jackie Star in 2009, Frederic Zemmour, the general manager at the L’Ermitage Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, said.

The name was changed multiple times to Sean Combs, Frank White, or Frank Black around 2011 and 2012, he testified. In 2019, the name was changed to Ryan Lopez, he said.

Frederic Zemmour, who is on the stand now, is the general manager at the L’Ermitage Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

Prosecutors are admitting hotel reservation records dating back to 2008 into evidence.

The government’s next witness is Frederic Zemmour, an employee at the L’Ermitage Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.

Zemmour is the 15th witness called by the prosecution.

Makeup artist Mylah Morales said she has done about eight media interviews about her knowledge of Cassie Ventura and Sean “Diddy” Combs’ relationship and the 2010 incident in the past year. She said she wasn’t paid for any of the public interviews.

Morales is now off the stand.

Defense attorney Anna Estevao revisited Mylah Morales’ testimony about the 2010 incident in the hotel.

Morales confirmed that she did not see what happened between Sean “Diddy” Combs and Cassie Ventura inside the bedroom after he went in.

The makeup artist testified that she and Ventura spoke with one of her friends, who was a lawyer, shortly after the incident.

“Yes,” Morales responded.

“You were concerned, right?” Estevao asked.

“Very concerned, of course,” Morales said.

Morales confirmed that she continued her friendship with Ventura after she and Combs had broken up.

Defense attorney Anna Estevao is showing the jury photos of Cassie Ventura from a music video shoot for the Wiz Khalifa song “Black and Yellow.”

Mylah Morales, who is on the stand now, did Ventura’s makeup for the shoot.

Before the jury entered, the defense argued to admit photos like this to push back on Ventura’s previous testimony that Sean “Diddy” Combs’ stifled her career and the “Freak Offs” he allegedly orchestrated took time away from her ability to pursue her career.

Estevao told the court they also want to show the jury that Ventura had to spend time up-keeping her appearance for work events, not just for the “Freak Offs.”

Assistant US Attorney Maurene Comey is done with direct examination. Defense attorney Anna Estevao is beginning cross-examination of the makeup artist.

Mylah Morales testifies at Combs' trial on Thursday.

Mylah Morales said she had a friend who’s a doctor come to the house to check Cassie Ventura out after she saw Ventura with injuries.

The doctor examined the injuries to Ventura’s face, her stomach and her ribs and recommended Ventura go to the emergency room, Morales, a former makeup artist for Sean “Diddy” Combs and Ventura, said.

Ventura refused to go to the emergency room, Morales testified, and they didn’t call the police.

Morales said she didn’t call police because she feared Combs and feared for her life.

After the incident, Morales said, she and Ventura never spoke of it again.

Mylah Morales, a former makeup artist for Sean “Diddy” Combs and Cassie Ventura, saw Ventura with injuries on her face once, around Grammy weekend in 2010, Morales testified under examination by Assistant US Attorney Maurene Comey.

After going to a party at Prince’s house, Morales and Ventura went back to a hotel room, Morales said. Combs came into the room later, saying, “Where the f**k is she,” Morales testified.

Combs went into the room where Ventura was and closed the door, and Morales heard yelling and screaming, Morales said.

“I was just frantic and I didn’t know what to do,” Morales said.

Later, Combs stormed out of the hotel room, Morales said. Ventura was “distraught,” she said.

“She had a swollen eye and a busted lip and knots on her head,” Morales testified.

Morales took Ventura to her home, where she stayed for a few days, the makeup artist testified.

Remember: Ventura testified last week that Combs beat her up in the bedroom of a hotel room following a party at Prince’s house. “(Combs) was throwing luggage at me, just calling me all kinds of names,” Ventura testified.

Ventura testified that she hadn’t told Combs she was going to be at Prince’s party, because she thought Combs wouldn’t let her go. Once she arrived at the party, Ventura caught a glimpse of Combs and could tell he was angry, so she “ran out as fast as I could,” she testified.

Editor’s note: If you or someone you know is struggling with intimate partner violence, there are resources available, including the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

Mylah Morales said she worked for Sean “Diddy” Combs from 2000 to 2005. She mentioned that she stopped working for him because she moved on to other clients, including Rihanna, with whom she worked for 13 years.

Morales said she first met Cassie Ventura on a photoshoot in Brooklyn, New York, when Ventura was 16 years old.

She started doing Ventura’s makeup regularly when Ventura signed with Bad Boy Records in 2007.

“We were close, she was like a little sister to me.”

Morales last did Ventura’s makeup in 2021, she said.

“Sean always made sure that the look was perfect, so we had to report back to him with pictures,” Morales said.

Prosecutors have called Mylah Morales, a former makeup artist for Sean “Diddy” Combs and his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, to the stand.
