Leicester fans leave after 30 minutes before Ruud takes responsibility for 4-0 defeat to Brentford - Fan Banter

Published 1 month ago13 minute read

Leicester were thrashed with goals from Yoane Wissa, Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard leading to loud boos from fans before half time. Fabio Carvalho scored late on to give the Bees their fourth of the game.

The result, going into the weekend’s action, sees Brentford securing not only their first back-to-back wins of the season but also a club-record fourth straight Premier League away victory, having failed to win a single game on the road this season prior to this run, seeing them in the race for a European qualification place.

For Leicester, it was a sixth home game in a row in which they have failed to score, with their last home goal coming on the 8th of December against Brighton.

Dear god, didn’t know it could be even worse than I’d expected. That’s an empty King Power for you. #leicester #lcfc pic.twitter.com/dQfA7oMq99

Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy speaking to Sky Sports: “You have to acknowledge it’s a huge step back. There was hope after recent performances, the beginning of the game was hopeful with three chances. It could have changed the game. AFter the bright start from us we were never in the game again and at half-time the game was done.”

On if the first goal turned the tide: “It did. Overall the general level and the difference between the level between Brentford and us was big. They showed they are big steps ahead of us at the moment. They controlled the game on and off the ball, they knew what they were doing. In the build-up they were organised and distrupted us. We were nowhere near their levels today.”

On is his substitutions gave him food for thought about starting them: “Always. After a blow like this first you have to recover and then we look at the next.”

On how he can lift his players after another home defeat: “We all have to lift ourselves first and then lift each other. That is always the case. Everyone is going home really disappointed and gutted with the loss and disappointed with the levels we showed today. We have to acknowledge it. The level between Brentford and us was significant and a worry for future hopes for us.”

On if not being adrift gives him hope to cling onto: “We have to. It’s the facts. We know we gave the other teams above us and below us a chance to gain points and momentum. Then it can become really difficult really quickly if we don’t start picking up points.”

Leicester boss Ruud van Nistelrooy, speaking to MOTD: “The level between us and Brentford was simply too big after the first 10-15 minutes.

“They were solid. They are in a place we are far off that and we have to acknowledge it.

“We had a very positive start to the game with some good attacks and good pressure but on the other hand Brentford were lethal.

“I think at half-time 3-0 down we said we wanted to go out and at least show something. We felt the levels were simply too big between the teams.

“Is it always fight? Of course we keep fighting and keep going but we have to perform to the maximum of our capabilities, only fighting is not going to get you anywhere. You also need the quality on the pitch at the right time.

“You have to recover from this first of all as a head coach you take responsibility first and foremost. Then rest and come back with new energy to lift the place where necessary.

“Tomorrow is a new day and we start again. It starts with yourself, reflect and recover and collectively we have to move on.”

Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy speaking to Sky Sports: “We played really well last week and one of the things we said before the game was making sure it was a full 90 [minutes] with that performance. It wasn’t to be today and we let ourselves down.”

On if the first goal knocked Leicester’s confidence: “Possibly. All the goals we have conceded too easy. We played a lot better second half but it’s a lot easier to do that when you are losing. We have all been there before and had spirited comebacks in the past. I don’t see why that shouldn’t change. It wasn’t to be tonight and we weren’t good enough.”

On how they kick on from here: “We have to keep working hard. We have put in some decent performances and need to be doing it consistently. We have to get back into training, watch this back and see where it all went wrong.”

On fans booing and recent protests: “It’s hard but we just have to concentrate on the football. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and to voice that and that is what the fans are doing.”

On taking positives from not being cut adrift: “There is massive determination. There are three out of the bottom four that are all fighting for it. As long as we are in with a shout we knuckle down and focus on putting in decent performances.”

Leicester goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, speaking to PLP: “We became a bit too open after we conceded the first goal. I think we are also in the state of mind at the moment where if we concede it is very uphill for us.

“What could help us in this moment is an early goal, get a lead and then work our way in the game.

“A tough night. We are in a tough situation, that is clear. It is tough for us as players and tough for the club in general. I know it sounds silly to say every week but we just have to work hard in training every week.

“The easy answer is to say we need to keep working. I think we are quite lucky we are still quite close to the other teams.

“We are always trying to stay positive as a group of players but it is tough at the moment.”

“The difference in the level between Brentford and us, was massive”

i like leicester but sometimes their fans seriously confuse me. wtf is this? singling out your best ever player and chanting at him to ‘sort it out’ is crazy work. loyalty goes both ways – when they’re loyal to you then you should be loyal back. this is just ridiculous pic.twitter.com/YglGiNw9lM

Brentford manager Thomas Frank speaking to Sky Sports: “I think I would go as far as saying we have a front four and Damsgaard really gets them going. The second goal, a great run from Wissa to open up the space for Bryan and then of course he does the hard work. The way they connect, I think in the front four we have all the abilities you need. It’s OK.”

Why is it clicking for Mikkel Damsgaard this season? “The big thing is he is fit. He has had injuries in past seasons and now we have a rhythm and he is clicking with the team and it is just really nice to see.

On performances this season: “I think we have been fairly consistent with performances. That ability to win – this is the first two in a row we have done this season which is strange. We are on an upward curve so hopefully we can continue that.

“It is special. It is not easy to win in the Premier League and not easy to win away. It is definitely not easy to win 4-0 away. I have good players, good staff and good leadership.

“I think they are brilliant individual players all of them, but what a unit they create by playing together. One plus one plus one, that normally equals 11 for a whole team but it is 14 or 15 for this team. We have now won two in a row but let’s see if we can get three in a row.”

Brentford boss Thomas Frank speaking to MOTD: “Very good performance in many ways. It is not easy to win away from home in the Premier League. Coming here and winning 4-0 against a team that has to put everything into avoiding relegation, I am very happy with our performance and with the way we went forward and the chances we created. A clean sheet is very important. Overall a happy man.”

On back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time since April: “That’s crazy. We have had a good season overall. Not through the roof, but good. We haven’t had back-to-back wins so that is quite strange. To get over the line and get the win is important.”

On impressive away form: “We haven’t changed that much. We tried to be consistent with our messaging to players.”

On substituting Christian Norgaard at half-time after he took a knock: “He didn’t feel that well at half-time. It was the right decision.”

On aiming for European places: “That is a big, big aim. We have dreams, we want to aim as high as possible no doubt about that and we want to push. It is the first time we had back-to-back wins, we need more further down the line before we can really dream. We are in a good place and can keep pushing.”

Brentford’s Mikkel Damsgaard, speaking to Sky Sports: “We are in a good spot as a team right now, so it is amazing to finally get the two wins in a row.

“We knew if we played a good match we had a very good chance to win. The most important thing was our attitude.

“It is very nice we can get the away wins, now we just need to get the home wins and add it together.

“We are of course dreaming a little but we know how tough it is to sneak in so we take it one game at a time. We are dreaming of Europe.”

Brentford goalscorer Yoane Wissa speaking to Sky Sports: “I’m very happy with the win. The first 10 miniutes we could have scored and Mark [Flekken] kept us in the game. But this is a performance to be proud of.

On the first goal setting the tempo of the game: “I know they are not in top shape and we are and as soon as we scored we started to control the game from the first minute to the end. We wanted to control the game, keep a clean sheet and get the three points.”

On Mikkel Damsgaard: “He is the link from the defender to the striker. He is the magician of the team and we are the finishers. We are happy with him and happy with the team. Four goals today and we need to be proud.”

On if Brentford can aim for European places: “Why not? We just need to keep winning, that is the aim. We can aim for top 10 and after that let’s see.”

Bryan Mbeumo on the success behind his partnership with Wissa: “Frienship, we get on really well on the pitch and off the pitch. You can see that it works well. We manage to always try to look for each other and it worked well.”

On Brentford’s front four thriving without Ivan Toney: “I always felt involved and now there are players that developed to this season and we have a really good group.”

On back-to-back wins for the first time this season: “It’s really important for the team and the fans as well and we are really happy.”

: Ruud is not the problem here. Lack of investment. Players approaching the latter stages of their careers. This current team would be mid/lower end team in championship

: Back down to the championship. Absolutely destroyed this club

:
Spineless.
Must win game and we perform like that
Season over surely
Rotten from top to bottom atm

: Get Rudkin gone. Sack the board. These players just don’t care enough anymore. Looking forward to league one football in 2027 🫡

: I wanted to stick by RvN. We need to stick by a manager at some point. I like him, like what he says but when I saw that team last night it’s like what’s the point. We’ve been shit for ages so stop picking the same shit team with a forward line of a combined 247 years old #lcfc

: Wtf was today. Even the players are tired of it, get Rudkin out. I said to 2 Leicester players, “unlucky today” and they both laughed when I said unlucky and said it wasnt even that, just shows the negativity at the club atm #LCFC

: That performance last night was totally unacceptable! I can take losing, but to down tools after their 1st goal just doesn’t sit right with me! These players are a disgrace barring a couple, and they all need to man up and fight for the shirt or do 1! We deserve better! RVN hasn’t helped himself during this woeful run either. His team selections,he’s reluctant to try a new system when clearly the way we set up is not working. Yes,I know they are not his players, but you are a coach it’s your job to come up with solutions! I don’t see any! Some very dark times ahead for this football club! We get relegated this season (when not if). The PL will be a distant memory for years to come. The way the club is in total decline with zero accountability from the big wigs, I can see us plummeting down the leagues! We can’t score. We can’t defend (that’s being kind). We have a manager who doesn’t believe in the players. We have players that don’t believe in the manager & who have downed tools. We have an incompetent board of clowns! Hardly a recipe for success, is it! We are doomed! Ruud will stick with the same starting 11 and formation that’s getting pummelled every week on Thursday against West Ham and then wonder why he’s not seeing any improvements! We are that bad. If we were playing in my garden, I’d shut the curtains! Fucking that last night was pathetic and embarrassing! And these fuckers call themselves professional footballers! Can’t even get the basics right! I reckon the club should refund all season tickets holders at least half of their money back! Take it out of the players wages! #LCFC

@MeasonCarl: The cub is really winding me up! Just more examples of outsourcing activities to people who have no care or feel for club & fans, this is something small but triggers me. We’re just a commercial activity right now & piss poor one at that, soul of the club is being wrecked. #LCFC
