Lawyer Katwa Kigen Withdraws from IEBC Commissioner Interviews

Katwa Kigen, a lawyer who represented President William Ruto in the 2022 presidential election petition at the Supreme Court and the International Criminal Court (ICC), has withdrawn his application for a position as an Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner. Kigen, a legal practitioner of over two decades, cited concerns regarding his suitability for the role as the reason for his withdrawal, aiming to prevent any distractions from the commission's important work.

Kigen stated, "Considering concerns, albeit unfounded, raised preceding my interview & to avoid unnecessary diversion and controversy in the commission's huge and important task, I have decided to withdraw my candidature." He was scheduled to be interviewed by the IEBC selection panel on Thursday, April 10.

His withdrawal followed remarks by former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi, who questioned the integrity of a lawyer closely associated with the President seeking a role in the electoral body. Havi raised concerns about accountability and integrity, questioning the appropriateness of the President's long-time advocate serving in the IEBC to oversee an election where the President is a candidate.
