Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 2 - Is It Happening? Everything We Know

Published 2 days ago4 minute read

Taylor Sheridan's is yet another smashing success, and the Western series has the potential for a second season. Released in 2023, Lawmen: Bass Reeves tells the story of the eponymous main character who was the first Black deputy U.S. Marshall who served west of the Mississippi River. Though it was originally envisioned as a spinoff of the Yellowstone universe, Lawmen was later confirmed to exist in its own timeline that is separate from Sheridan's smash-hit franchise. Nevertheless, the series delivers all the gripping Western action that is expected from one of the producer's other programs.

Premiering on November 5th, 2023 to a decent critical reception, Lawmen: Bass Reeves straddles the line between history and fiction as it brings the true story to life with Sheridan's signature flourishes. The Yellowstone TV shows are notoriously hit or miss when it comes to critical reception, but Lawmen snapped that trend with a well-received change of pace. The biggest chance for Lawmen: Bass Reeves to blaze its own trail outside the Yellowstone universe is for it to find a second gear and deliver on its open-ended Lawmen title. As such, a second season could help it expand into a bona fide franchise all its own.

Though there was almost no news regarding the show throughout 2024, the latest details come as an optimistic update for Lawmen: Bass Reeves season 2. While attending 2025's SXSW festival, series star David Oyelowo took time to discuss Bass Reeves' future with ScreenRant, and he struck a hopeful note. , though he clearly knows as much about season 2 as the public. Unfortunately, it seems as if Oyelowo's enthusiasm alone isn't enough to spur the sophomore season yet.

Read Oyelowo's comments here:

The more people ask for more Lawmen: Bass Reeves, the sooner it'll happen, I think. I loved, loved, loved playing that role. To saddle up again is something I'm open to, so you never know.

. However, the overwhelming popularity of Taylor Sheridan's shows might spur Paramount+ to give Lawmen: Bass Reeves a second season. Though 1883 only lasted for one season, 1923 came as the second spinoff to the original Yellowstone series and was given a sophomore season. Lawmen: Bass Reeves might not be one of Sheridan's Yellowstone shows, but it proved to be a big hit nevertheless.

Lawmen: Bass Reeves concluded on December 17, 2023.

Most Taylor Sheridan programs have run for at least 2 seasons, and Lawmen: Bass Reeves has almost unlimited potential. Even though Yellowstone has faded into the past, the various spinoffs prove that Sheridan hasn't missed a beat. Outside of that, Sheridan's non-Yellowstone hits like Tulsa King and The Mayor of Kingstown show that he has the golden touch on the small screen. However, as more time passes, the likelihood of a second season get slimmer and slimmer.
