It was a moment of national pride and personal triumph, a father witnessing his son serve Kenya with honour and skill.
Today, that same father stands in mourning, shattered by a tragedy that has turned his family's world upside down.
Major Evander Ochieng Amonde, one of the Kenya Air Force pilots celebrated for their precision and bravery, lost his life in a plane crash in Kwale on Sunday.
Details surrounding the crash are still emerging, but what remains undeniable is the gaping hole left in the hearts of many, especially his grieving family.
“Yesterday, my world shattered in ways I never imagined possible,” said Otieno Amonde in a heart-wrenching tribute. “I lost my beloved son in a tragic plane crash, an event I still struggle to comprehend.

He added that as he prepared to see him one last time at the War Memorial in Nairobi, the reality of his absence remained unreal, leaving him speechless and lost in sorrow.
Amonde described his son as more than just a military officer; he was the light of the family.
“He was more than just my son; he was my joy, my light, my hope for the future. His presence filled every space with warmth, laughter, and love,” he chimed.
Kenya is no stranger to honouring its military heroes, but the pain of losing one in peacetime, while serving his country, is a cruel reminder of the risks they shoulder every day.
He requested thoughts and prayers during this difficult time, asking those who knew and loved him to remember the incredible life he lived.
Major Evander’s legacy, however, lives on in the skies he once soared, in the hearts of those he inspired, and in the unwavering love of a father whose pride remains unshaken even in mourning.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
Evander Amonde was among two pilots killed when a Kenya Air Force aircraft crashed during a training flight in Kwale County.
Details indicate that the Grob 120A aircraft experienced an emergency and crashed near Mwakijembe Primary School in Mafundani village.
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) confirmed the accident and the loss of both pilots, adding that investigation teams have been dispatched to establish the cause of the crash.
