Omicron subvariants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 have reportedly emerged as the key drivers behind the recent surge in COVID-19 cases.
According to the data shared by the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), a single case of NB.1.8.1 as well as four infections of LF.7 have been reported in India. NB.1.8.1 is a SARS-CoV-2 variant derived from the recombinant variant XDV.1.5.1.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 as "Variant Under Monitoring" (VUM). This means they’re being closely tracked but aren’t currently considered a "Variant of Interest" or "Variant of Concern".
