Winnie narrated that her daughter, Nicolina Njeri, was born in 2012, one month before her due date, and started developing health complications four days after her birth.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Winnie said that on the fourth day after her birth, Nicolina developed breathing complications and was rushed to the hospital.

Since then, the young Nicolina has been in and out of hospitals.

"She was on and off the hospital from one doctor to another in a different hospital, since one doctor would see her more than 5 times in a month and could send her for more investigations to know why the baby is not improving after the treatment, and it became a medical norm," the mum said.

She narrated that as months went by, she realised her child was not gaining any weight, was also unable to feed, and her spine was curved.

The little Nicolina was taken to the Kijabe hospital for a series of tests to find out why she was always sickly.

The tests found out that Winnie's young daughter was suffering from Marfan's Syndrome, a heart condition.

"She had to start clinic with different specialised consultants ie, ophthalmologist, orthopaedic, pulmonologist, cardiologist, nutritionists, gastroenterologists, and the journey drained the family financially, emotionally, psychologically, spiritually and physically. Her education and social life were badly affected. Her spine continued to bend despite all medical management," she said.
"Her hip was disproportional and that had already deformed her right leg and had delayed her from walking, she was put under minimal physiotherapist procedures and the deformity was corrected through physio and rehabilitation," Winnie added.

Winnie narrated that the bend worsened, even threatening her supply of oxygen to the body, and she was thus taken to India for surgery.

"At seven years, she underwent through first complex spine surgery to correct the kyphoscoliosis, and she was put on adjustable growing rods and which have to be adjusted every year through surgery," she said.

While in India, the doctors also found out the little girl had another condition, Marfanoid progeroid lipodystrophy, a genetic congenital disorder which is rare.

Nicolina's mum said that her daughter's diet is very complex since her body doesn’t take fat and minerals, which means she has to be on a supplementary diet, which is not easy to afford due to the constrained finances.

Every year, she is required to undergo surgery to adjust the spine growth rods, which costs the family KSh 1.5million to 2.5 million due to the other health complications and for the yearly medicine.

Winnie said her daughter has also recently developed a wound in the spine due to the growth rods, which has worsened Nicolina's health.

She needs KSh 3m, to facilitate another surgery for her daughter, and she now appeals to well-wishers to help her raise this amount.

In other news, a Murang'a family also sought help for their little daughter, who is facing a life-threatening condition that caused a leak from the lymphatic system.

The father explained that the young Leslie has so far undergone 12 surgical procedures to try to close the lymphatic leakage.

Getting treatment for Leslie's condition had been financially strenuous for the family after the medical bill skyrocketed to KSh 18 million after 29 weeks in the ICU, and treatment in India.
