Kate Hudson Told to 'Divorce' Parents Goldie Hawn, Bill Hudson Before 'Party of Five'

Kate Hudson almost emancipated from her parents, Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson, so that she could get more work before landing a role on Party of Five.

The 46-year-old revealed during the inaugural Newport Beach TV Fest that she got a small part in an unnamed project before being hired for the teen drama series.

"I had gotten this part that they wanted me to basically divorce my parents so that I could work as an adult," she said during the live Awards Chatter podcast panel.

"My mom was like, ‘No – never happening,'" she added. "But then I got the Party of Five and it was so great.”

The hit Fox drama premiered in 1994, following the lives of the five Salinger siblings after their parents were killed in a car crash, leaving the eldest brother Charlie (Matthew Fox) to step up as their guardian.

Kate guest-starred as Cory, a coworker of Michael Goorjian's character, Justin, in the second season.

The actress noted that Goorjian was “so sweet" and "so kind" on set, as it was her first role.

“It was like two days of shooting and I missed two days of school and my mom actually allowed me to do it,” Kate added.

“I was 16 and obsessed with Party of Five, so walking onto that set was like, I couldn't believe that I was going to have a guest role on it, a day player role,” she shared. “I was like, oh. It was so fun.”

After six seasons, the show came to a close on May 3, 2000, and the Salinger kids — including Neve Campbell and Lacey Chabert — went their separate ways.

Kate ultimately didn’t take the advice to "divorce" her parents, as she and Hawn, 79, have an admittedly close relationship. However, the Almost Famous actress has had a strained relationship with her father for most of her life.

After Hawn and Bill divorced in 1982, the First Wives Club actress began dating her longtime partner, Kurt Russell, who helped raise Kate.

Despite Hawn and Russell's influence in Hollywood, Kate told audience members that she turned down a role in one of her stepdad's films because she didn't want her career to be "defined" by her parents.

Hawn also addressed the dynamic during an appearance on Kelly Ripa's Let's Talk Off Camera podcast last year. She recalled the early days of Kate's career, when the teen would complain about interviewers always asking her about her parents.

"I told her, 'The truth of the matter is we have to embrace each other,'" Hawn told Ripa. "'I mean, yes, you're gonna talk about me, and one day I'm gonna talk about you. And I'm gonna be Katie's mother, and that could be pretty cool.' "

The mother-daughter duo has been open about their close-knit relationship over the years, from the personal bond they share to their connection over their careers.

Kate previously told the Los Angeles Times, “I live seven blocks from my mom now, and she comes over every day.”
