Kansas Basketball Loses Fifth Player to the Transfer Portal

Published 2 days ago2 minute read

The hits continue to pile up for Kansas basketball, and it appears that Bill Self might have quite a rebuild on his hands before the 2025 season arrives next fall.

Over the weekend, Kansas learned that star freshman Flory Bidunga would enter the transfer portal, and shortly after that, the Jayhawks lost Rakease Passmore and David Coit to the portal as well.

With Zach Clemence hopping back in the portal on Friday, the Jayhawks had a total of four non-graduating players leaving, but now the number is rising again.

According to reports from On3’s Keegan Pope, junior guard Rylan Griffen has entered the transfer portal after spending just one season in Lawrence.

Griffen transferred to KU after the 2023-24 season out of Alabama and was considered one of the biggest targets in the portal last cycle.

That never lived up to the billing, though, as Griffen played just over 20 minutes per game for the Jayhawks, averaging 6.3 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest. His shooting numbers dipped from 45% to just 37% from the field compared to his sophomore season.

Now, with five players going portaling, plus the loss of several key players to graduation, Kansas will have a lot of roster spots needing to be filled before the 2025 season begins.

It’ll be an interesting year for KU, too, as they started 2024 off as the No. 1 team in the country but got bounced in the first round of the tournament and ended the year at 21-13. There’s a lot to prove for this program going forward, and right now, it appears they’re still trying to determine who’s in and who’s out.
