Islanders add Bob Boughner and Ray Bennett as assistant coaches
The Islanders on Monday announced the hiring of veteran coaches Bob Boughner and Ray Bennett as assistants to head coach Patrick Roy as he and new general manager/executive vice president Mathieu Darche moved quickly to replace Tommy Albelin and John MacLean.
Darche announced at his introductory news conference on May 29 that MacLean and Albelin, who both had close ties to former president/GM Lou Lamoriello as ex-Devils players, would not return.
The Islanders also made it official that both goalie coach Piero Greco, who has been with the Islanders since 2018, and assistant coach Benoit Desrosiers, hired shortly after Roy took over on Jan. 20, 2024, will return.
Boughner, 54, spent the previous three seasons as the Red Wings' associate coach. He was the Panthers' head coach from 2017 to 2019 and then spent three seasons as the Sharks’ bench boss from 2019 to 2022, compiling an overall mark of 147-147-45. Boughner, a rugged defenseman, also played 630 NHL regular-season games across 10 seasons with the Sabres, Flames, Predators, Penguins, Avalanche and Hurricanes. He totaled 15 goals, 57 assists and 1,382 penalty minutes.
Bennett, 63, did not play in the NHL but has been an assistant coach in the league for 24 seasons, including the last eight with the Avalanche. He also was with the Kings from 1999 to 2006 and the Blues from 2007 to 2017.
The Islanders did not announce the on-staff responsibilities for Bennett and Boughner, but MacLean and Albelin ran the power play and the penalty kill, respectively, last season while Bennett was in charge of the Avalanche’s power play and Boughner guided the Red Wings’ penalty kill.
Special teams’ improvement is a must for the Islanders.
Under MacLean, who spent three seasons on the Islanders’ staff, the power play finished 31st out of 32 teams last season at 12.6% (26-for-207), while the penalty kill ranked also ranked 31st at 72.2% (130-for-180) in Albelin’s only season with the team.
