Is it OK for parents to bring just one child on holidays?

Published 2 days ago3 minute read
This is what people on TikTok came to debate recently when a couple shared that they had taken a foreign holiday with their four-month-old baby, but left their two-year-old son at home with his grandmother.

The internet has slammed a couple’s decision to go on holiday with their baby, while leaving their toddler at home to be cared for by grandparents.

In a TikTok video that soon went viral, the couple shared how they had booked a four-day stay in Morocco – and were bringing along their four-month-old baby, Harry, while big brother George, who is two, was staying at home with his grandmother.

And according to the parents, the arrangement worked like a charm.

@gettingreadywithteddy Would you leave your child at home to take another one away? I wasn’t sure on the idea of it at first but im so glad we did it, it was so amazing to make those 1-on-1 memories with our second 🫶🏼 #secondtimemom ♬ Iris – Jada Facer

In the video, the couple shared:

‘POV: You leave your first baby at home to take your second baby on their first holiday, where it can be all about them and not their big sibling,’ they wrote in text on the video.

However, in the caption, the mum admitted she had felt unsure about leaving her toddler son at home at first.

‘I wasn’t sure on the idea of it at first, but I’m so glad we did it,’ she explained.

‘It was so amazing to make those one-on-one memories with our second.

However, their TikTok followers were not impressed.

‘This is horrible,’ wrote one commenter.

‘I fear you did it the wrong way around,’ another one chimed in.

And a third person stated:

‘This is exactly why older siblings feel left out.’

Create memories just for him

However, after the video went viral, and people started criticising the couple for their decision, the mum posted a follow-up video explaining their decision.

‘Just to clarify, this will only be for his first ever holiday and any other holidays after will be family holidays,’ she revealed.

The mum-of-two also said the trip was about giving their second child the same memories they had created with their first.

‘People are saying it’s either favouritism or we don’t have the money, and that’s definitely not the case,’ she explained.

‘As a second child, his life very much revolves around his brother’s schedule,e so we wanted to give him something that was all about him.’

The mum also said she has zero concerns about the trip causing any long-term damage to her toddler son, and said that any concerns that the trip could cause him to develop abandonment issues or long-term resentment are ‘absolutely crazy.

Instead, the mum argues, little George was happy and well looked after by his grandmother, although the 30-year-old did admit she had felt some guilt that he missed out on the Moroccan fun.
