Thompson’s scholarship offers included Clemson, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Alabama, Indiana and, notably, Purdue.

The Boilermakers were after Thompson as a 2026 prospect and was considered a top recruiting target. Ben McCollum and Iowa were able to become a factor with some room on the roster this coming season.

It’s a new era in Iowa City with longtime head coach Fran McCaffery, the program’s all-time wins leader, being let go after the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. In steps McCollum, a longtime Division-II darling who excelled in his first and only year at Drake.

Landing Thompson is no doubt a splash for the Hawkeyes, he was a hotly pursued player whose recruitment took a drastic turn once they entered the fold. Time will tell how the McCollum era unfolds, but he’s already making his presence felt in the conference.
