Huntington Claims First Long Island Class A Girls Lacrosse Title in Three Decades

The Huntington Blue Devils girls lacrosse team achieved a historic victory, defeating two-time defending champion Massapequa 12-8 in the Long Island Class A championship. The decisive game took place on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at Adelphi University, marking Huntington's first Long Island title since 1995. Scenes from the final moments captured the team's jubilation, with players like Jolie Weinschreider and teammates Ava McDonald and goalie Juliet Johnson celebrating their hard-fought win.

Emblazoned with the motto "bet on us" on their warm-up jerseys, the Blue Devils have consistently aimed to prove their mettle. "No one’s ever bet on us," junior captain Jolie Weinschreider explained. "We’ve always been overlooked by teams, by coaches, by everyone, and we have so much to prove." Coach Katie Reilly echoed this sentiment, stating, "For a long time, we’ve felt like the only people who really care about us is us. It was time that we proved that we belong here. Counties was the first step, and this was the next."

Huntington started the game with remarkable energy, establishing a commanding 4-0 lead within the first four minutes. This early offensive surge was initiated by Weinschreider, who scored on a free position at the 10:33 mark. "The last two games we’ve played have gone into overtime," Weinschreider noted. "This game, we really wanted to get the score up early, and that’s kind of exactly what happened." The Blue Devils continued their dominance into the second quarter, shutting out Massapequa while adding two more goals, including one from Devon St. John off a rebound and another from Weinschreider's solo run, to lead 6-1 at halftime.

Massapequa's Isabella Grosso opened the scoring in the third quarter, but Huntington responded with a 4-0 run. Though junior Grace Hoffman sparked a comeback attempt for Massapequa, crucial saves by Huntington's freshman goalie, Juliette Johnson, maintained the Blue Devils' lead. Valentina Puccio was a key offensive player for Huntington, often pressured by Massapequa's Reilly Cereghino, but still managing to score and contribute significantly. St. John’s shot at the buzzer ultimately sealed the 12-8 victory.

Juliette Johnson's performance in goal was pivotal, with Coach Reilly praising her ability to make "huge saves" when the defense was breached. Weinschreider and Valentina Puccio each led Huntington's offense with three goals. Sabrina Boyle contributed two goals and one assist, while Devon St. John also scored two goals. Johnson made a total of five saves. For Massapequa (12-8), Paige Garguilo scored two goals and had one assist, and goalie Emily Fitzgerald made six saves.

"We all believe in each other," Puccio stated. "We really are like a family, and this is something we’ve worked so hard for, so it’s incredible to see it come to life." With an impressive 18-2 record, Huntington now advances to the regional finals at Lakeland High School on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., with their opponent yet to be determined. This marks their first return to the state-level competition since 1995, where they reached the semifinal round. "Well now, we want to go all the way," Coach Reilly affirmed. "We have no idea what to expect competing at this stage. We’ve just got to give it everything we have until, hopefully, the very end."
