As digital transformation sweeps across various sectors, churches in the United States are increasingly integrating modern technology into their operations, including the use of cryptocurrency. According to a recent report by Pushpay, a financial services company for churches, the adoption of cryptocurrency and AI is gaining traction among church leaders. The 2025 State of Church Tech report, which surveyed over 1,700 church leaders, highlights a growing trend towards embracing technological advancements as part of the church's mission.
Pushpay's report reveals that 45% of church leaders are now utilizing artificial intelligence, marking an 80% increase from the previous year. These technologies are primarily used for communication tasks, such as content creation, editing, and graphic design, with 18% of leaders even incorporating AI into sermon development. This shift reflects a broader acceptance of technology within religious institutions, aligning with global trends.
In a related development, Pope Leo XIV recently addressed the implications of AI during a speech to the College of Cardinals, underscoring the challenges it presents to human dignity and justice. Meanwhile, livestreaming has become a staple for churches, with 90% of leaders streaming worship services, a practice that gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The report also highlights a significant interest in non-traditional forms of giving. While only 10% of churches currently accept cryptocurrency donations, 39% of leaders believe it will become strategically important within the next two to three years. This represents a 44% increase from 2024, although a majority of respondents still express a need to learn more about cryptocurrency's benefits.
Pushpay's Chief Product Officer, Gruia Pitigoi-Aron, emphasizes that the integration of technology is not about replacing the human element of worship but enhancing the church's mission and community engagement. The use of QR codes and other digital tools is also on the rise, facilitating easier access to information and donation platforms.
With over half of the surveyed church leaders reporting increased tech budgets in the past two years, it's clear that the role of technology in religious practice is expanding. The IndexBox platform further supports this trend, noting a global increase in the adoption of digital solutions across various industries, including religious organizations.
