Gunmen Kill Police Officer On Duty, Abduct Chinese Expatriate In Kogi
An officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Inspector Adeniyi Ojo, was killed and a Chinese national abducted on Saturday when armed men ambushed their convoy in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State.
A situation report from the police confirmed that the incident occurred around 1:22 p.m. when a team comprising police and civil defence personnel was escorting Mr. Gu Xiaowu, a Chinese expatriate working with Rilix Mining Company at Isanlu.
According to the situation report, during the attack, Inspector Ojo of the Counter-Terrorism Unit sustained a fatal gunshot wound on the neck during the heavy gunfire assault.
Despite the swift deployment of a police response team and a tactical sweep of the area, the assailants escaped into the bush with the abducted expatriate.
“Inspector Abubakar Isiaka activated a contingency response team of men mine in company of the men from the Isanlu Division and the other security teams,” the police report said.
“They mobilised to the scene and conducted a tactical sweep of the surrounding area, however, the assailants had already gone into the bush with the abducted VIP.”
Inspector Ojo was rushed to the General Hospital, Isanlu, where he was confirmed dead.
The police report said Inspector Ojo’s remains have been deposited in the hospital mortuary.
“His assault rifle with breach No. 24655, along with forty- sixty rounds of live ammunition, was recovered at the scene.
“It was discovered that he had expended 14 rounds of live ammunition during the encounter,” the police said.
The late officer, from Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, was born on February 26, 1984 and enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force on March 1, 2008.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
