Gridlock as Container Truck Destroys Billboard In Lekki
Traffic in the upscale Ikoyi and Lekki areas of Lagos State was severely disrupted Wednesday morning after a container truck became wedged under an overhead billboard near the Lekki Link Bridge, heading towards Alexandra Roundabout. The incident, which occurred around 5:30 am, brought traffic to a standstill, affecting commuters traveling to work.
The trapped truck occupied approximately 85% of the road, rendering it impassable. Emergency responders are working to clear the obstruction. Adebayo Taofiq, the spokesman for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), indicated that a welder had been called to dismantle parts of the billboard and barriers.
"The road has been temporarily cordoned off, while effort is ongoing to remove the damaged barrier," Taofiq stated in an interview with Channels Television.
In response, traffic managers have closed Admiralty Way inward Lekki. According to LASTMA, the truck attempted to pass under a billboard structure but became ensnared.
"The severity of the entanglement necessitated the deployment of a technical specialist, who is presently engaged in precision-cutting of the iron framework to liberate the immobilised vehicle," the LASTMA spokesman explained in a statement. "Consequently, the expressway has been cordoned off temporarily to allow for an unimpeded and secure rescue operation. This strategic closure is imperative to safeguard both operatives and road users during the ongoing extraction process."
LASTMA has issued an apology for the resulting inconvenience and has assured the public that normal traffic flow will be restored as soon as the operation is completed.
