Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced the government’s commitment to significantly increase investment in educational infrastructure, with a particular focus on basic education.

Speaking at the 21st Annual Education World Forum in London on Wednesday, May 22, 2025, the minister stated that a major portion of the investment would be directed towards addressing the issue of over 5,000 schools currently operating under trees across Ghana.

“That is the vision of the new government, to invest more in basic education, if you assess our education funding regime over the last decade, you will find that expenditure has been disproportionately weighted in favour of pre-senior high school, as opposed to basic education and tertiary education", he remarked.

He further explained that the move marks a clear policy shift under President Mahama’s administration in line with the constitutional guarantee of free, compulsory, and universal basic education.

"So, there is a policy shift, and that policy shift of President Mahama is to prioritise basic education, the 1992 Constitution guarantees free, compulsory universal basic education", he added.

Haruna Iddrisu stressed the need for global partnerships to help improve access to education and learning outcomes.

“Our work as government is to improve learning outcomes, with support from the World Bank, we’ve made some progress, but there remains a national challenge in literacy and foundational learning", he added.
