Google Uses AI to Combat Scams on Multiple Platforms

Google is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance online security across its platforms, including Search, Chrome, and Android. The company is using AI to combat scams and protect users from dangerous websites and fraudulent activities.
In a recent blog post on May 8, 2025, Google announced that it is now catching 20 times more "scammy results" in Search thanks to AI. This significant improvement helps steer users away from harmful sites that attempt to steal personal information. Google's AI is adept at identifying large-scale scam campaigns, such as airline scams, and has already reduced these scams in Search by over 80%.
Chrome's Enhanced Protection mode offers robust security against phishing and online scams, proving twice as effective as Google's Standard Protection. Google is now utilizing Gemini Nano, an on-device AI, to further enhance scam protection for Enhanced Protection users on desktop. Gemini Nano's on-device functionality allows it to instantly detect new scams, even those previously unseen. The AI excels at understanding complex websites, enabling it to respond rapidly to emerging scam tactics. It is currently deployed to block tech support scams, which are among the most prevalent and hazardous online threats. Google intends to extend this AI protection to Android devices and broaden its coverage to include more types of scams in the future.
Chrome on Android is introducing AI-powered warnings to identify spammy or misleading website notifications. If a notification appears suspicious, Chrome’s on-device AI will display a warning, providing users with the option to unsubscribe or review what has been blocked. Users retain control, as they can still allow future notifications from a site if the alert was incorrect.
For scams perpetrated through calls and text messages, Google has introduced on-device AI-powered Scam Detection in the Messages and Phone apps on Android. This feature helps users identify and avoid potential scams in real-time.
