Gonzaga bolsters roster with former WAC POY star forward for 2025-26 campaign
After a slow start, Gonzaga Basketball has been much more active in the transfer portal for the past couple of weeks. They landed former ASU shooting guard Adam Miller to give the roster a sharpshooter in the backcourt. And they were reportedly in the mix for a couple of other pieces, with Desmond Claude and Tyon Grant-Foster among the targets.
The Bulldogs ultimately landed one of them, getting a commitment on Wednesday.
Grant-Foster has had a storied college basketball career. Starting out as a JUCO All-American in 2019, the 6’7 "wing played at Kansas for a year before going to DePaul. There, a cardiac incident almost derailed his athletic career before he ultimately landed at Grand Canyon.
For the past two years, Grant-Foster has been one of the best mid-major players. He averaged 20 points per game in 2023-24 and earned WAC Player of the Year honors. However, his stats and efficiency took a dip this past season (14).8 ppg on 40% FG), hurting his stock a bit. Still, he’s an athletic playmaking wing who can create his own shot and give them a legit defender as well.
Gonzaga has depth on the wings but also some question marks. Steele Venters, a 6’7 wing and former Big Sky POY, has missed the last two years due to injury and his impact is unknown. Plus, Braden Huff, the projected starting power forward, doesn’t have a ton of experience playing there. So, having someone like Grant-Foster, who can play and defend at that position at the WCC level, is a needed boost.
That being said, it’s not official that he’ll be on the roster, as Grant-Foster needs a waiver from the NCAA to play next season, due to unique eligibility/clock issues with his career. But while assuming what the NCAA will do is a risk in itself, the noted medical history that he’s had should make it an easier move compared to other waiver claims. And if it works out in Gonzaga’s favor, it’ll be a big impact pickup for the program.
