Gabe Norwood's Multiple Roles: Gilas Youth, SBP, and Rain or Shine

Gabe Norwood is currently managing a demanding schedule both on and off the basketball court. In addition to his role as a player for Rain or Shine in the PBA Philippine Cup, Norwood has joined LA Tenorio as part of the coaching staff for Gilas Pilipinas Youth, which is preparing for the FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers. Furthermore, Norwood has expanded his involvement in basketball by contributing to the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’ Constitutional Review Committee.

During the recent National Congress, the SBP approved amendments to its by-laws, including the addition of a Player Representative to the board for the upcoming October elections. Norwood played a significant role in this development. According to Norwood, Erika Dy, the SBP executive director, invited him to provide insights on the legislation from a player’s perspective. He aimed to be as open and helpful as possible, expressing his ongoing desire to contribute to the game in any capacity. Norwood acknowledged the unique opportunity and his enthusiasm for being part of the commission.

Norwood noted that he gained substantial knowledge regarding the structure and organization of a basketball federation. He found the experience valuable, especially as he is in the later stages of his playing career. He expressed eagerness for the successful implementation of the changes, despite not having a legal background like many others in the committee. Norwood aimed to contribute his insights to facilitate sound decisions for the future of basketball.

In addition to his legislative involvement, Norwood is also preparing for the SEABA Qualifiers with Gilas Pilipinas Youth. Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao has permitted Norwood to participate in practices and the tournament, with the condition that he prioritizes his commitments to the Elasto Painters in case of scheduling conflicts. Due to changes in the schedule, Norwood will only miss one Batang Gilas game, as it conflicts with Rain or Shine's game against Phoenix on May 28. Norwood appreciated Coach Yeng's support when he received the offer to work with Coach LA.

Norwood is currently working out how to balance his responsibilities with Gilas Pilipinas Youth and Rain or Shine, anticipating many miles on the road. Another pressing matter for Gilas Youth is finalizing the roster to 12 players. The selection process is proving challenging, as all 18 players are working diligently, balancing their basketball commitments with school obligations and other leagues. Norwood expressed gratitude for their sacrifices and hopes to reward them with a winning opportunity.

While assisting Gilas Youth in their preparations for the SEABA qualifiers, Norwood has taken on a more prominent role with the Elasto Painters, starting in the first five games of the conference. Despite his multiple commitments, Norwood has performed well, averaging 7.0 points and 5.4 rebounds in his starts. In comparison, he only started twice in 14 games during the last Commissioner’s Cup, averaging 2.1 points and 1.9 rebounds in 10 minutes of play. Norwood downplayed his performance, attributing it to injuries within the team, including Caelan Tiongson, Keith Datu, and Beau Belga. He emphasized the team's focus on maintaining a competitive record until everyone recovers.

Despite his busy schedule, Norwood believes he still has much to offer Rain or Shine, even in his 17th year with the team. He aims to contribute as much as possible, particularly on the court, and feels fortunate to still be able to help. He considers it a blessing to contribute, even as the No. 1 overall pick of the 2008 draft.
