FUTA VC seeks use of natural resources to address power issues
Professor Adenike Oladiji, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has called on the Federal Government to harness Nigeria’s abundant natural resources sustainably to address the country’s persistent power challenges.
Speaking on Thursday during the inauguration of solar-powered streetlights donated by the FUTA ’95–’01 Alumni Association at the university campus in Akure, Professor Oladiji emphasised the need for local production of renewable energy components.
“Our advice to the Federal Government is that while we continue to rely on hydro, solar, wind, and other renewable sources, efforts should be made to attract investors who will manufacture key materials such as batteries and solar panels locally,” she said. “Properly harnessing our natural resources can go a long way toward solving the power problem.”
The Vice Chancellor also praised the 1995–2001 alumni set for their generosity in supporting their alma mater, urging other alumni groups to follow their lead. “What we are doing now is inspiring current students on campus,” she noted.
Dr. Olufemi Fajolu, President of the FUTA 1995–2001 set, revealed that the solar streetlights project cost the association a minimum of N20 million, all contributed by members to alleviate the university’s burden and improve student welfare.
“Since the founding of our association over ten years ago, we have committed ourselves to two missions: advancing our alma mater and supporting our members’ welfare,” he said.
“Today’s project is another step in that direction. We believe building a university we can all be proud of should not be left to the government alone.”
Dr. Fajolu added that the association remains dedicated to supporting its members and their families in times of need and encouraged students to see the streetlights not just as illumination but as symbols of community support.
Adeyemi Bello, President of FUTA Worldwide, encouraged students to appreciate the project as a reminder that the government alone cannot provide all campus facilities.
Representatives of the student body, Oni Timileyin and Ifeoluwa Ojo, expressed gratitude for the donation, saying the streetlights have “illuminated not only the campus but also our hearts.”
They pledged to protect the streetlights from vandalism and ensure their proper use.
