Freight forwarders urge Tinubu to reform police for national security, economic growth

Published 13 hours ago3 minute read

The Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics of Nigeria (APFFLON) has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently reform the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to enhance national security and drive economic growth in the maritime and aviation sectors.

According to APFFLON, inefficiencies in security operations threaten maritime businesses and trade facilitation, causing delays and escalating operational costs.

The appeal was made amid growing concerns from trade professionals over lapses in port security and law enforcement logistics, which are seen as obstacles to Nigeria’s competitiveness in global trade.

In an open letter addressed to the President and routed through the Office of the Chief of Staff, APFFLON stressed that police reform is critical for national safety and pivotal for advancing trade, improving port efficiency, and attracting foreign investment.

The letter, signed by APFFLON’s National President, Frank Ogunojemite, was also copied to the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, the Inspector General of Police, and the Assistant Inspectors General in charge of Maritime, Zone 2, and Zone 11.

The group urged Tinubu to implement immediate and comprehensive reforms in the NPF, particularly to address the deplorable conditions of police barracks and the inadequate welfare of officers.

APFFLON lamented the “distressing and inhumane” conditions endured by many police officers, particularly in barracks such as Kam Salem. The association described these poor conditions as a significant threat to national security, public trust in law enforcement, and maritime trade.

The group noted that deteriorating infrastructure has led to widespread demoralisation among officers, undermining effective policing and eroding public confidence.

APFFLON emphasised the importance of a well-equipped and professionally supported police force in securing ports and terminals, combating piracy and robbery, and facilitating smoother trade operations.

The association proposed a comprehensive reform agenda, including the immediate assessment and renovation of all dilapidated police barracks, increased budgetary allocations for force maintenance and infrastructure upgrades, regular training, community engagement, mental health support, and the establishment of a dedicated Police Intelligence School.

APFFLON also called for improved police-public relations, the deployment of modern tools such as drones, tracking systems, and forensic equipment for criminal investigations, as well as legislative and executive support to foster stronger collaboration between security agencies in addressing evolving threats.

The group highlighted the broader implications of effective policing, emphasising its role in creating a stable environment for business in the maritime and aviation sectors. They cited enhanced investor confidence, improved international credibility, and greater compliance with global security standards.

“Good policing is essential for maintaining a safe and secure maritime and aviation environment, which is fundamental for the growth and development of these industries,” APFFLON added.
