An explosion has rocked a storage depot at Kadena Air Base on the Japanese island of Okinawa, injuring at least four people.

The blast occurred around 11:20 am local time on Monday at a facility used to house unexploded wartime munitions, operated by the Japanese Self-Defence Forces' (SDF) unexploded ordnance disposal team, local media reported, as cited by RT.

According to local media and defence sources, the four injured soldiers are members of the SDF, and none of the injuries is believed to be life-threatening. Local authorities and emergency services responded to the incident in Yomitan Village.

Kadena Air Base, the US military's largest air base in the Asia-Pacific region, has yet to issue a formal statement as both Japanese and US military officials assess the damage. The base is strategically significant, housing approximately 20,000 personnel and serving as the headquarters of the US Air Force's 18th Wing.

According to the report, Kadena is jointly used by the Japanese Self-Defence Forces, including SDF logistics and ordnance teams like the one involved in Monday’s explosion. The base also routinely hosts rotating deployments of advanced U.S. aircraft, such as F-22 Raptors and B-52 strategic bombers, and plays a critical role in monitoring regional hotspots, including North Korea, Taiwan, and the South China Sea.

The incident is currently under investigation, with officials working to determine the cause of the explosion and assess any potential impact on operations at the base.
