Ananda Lewis, best known to most for her work on MTV as VJ in the late 90s, has died at 52.

Her sister, Lakshmi, shared the news on Facebook, writing, “She’s free, and in His heavenly arms. Lord, rest her soul.”

Lewis had been dealing with breast cancer for the past several years, first revealing her diagnosis in 2020.

“I have been fighting to get cancer out of my body for almost two years,” she said in an Instagram video at the time, adding that she had not been getting routine mammograms, despite her mother also having the disease, explaining she worried about the radiation.

The former talk show host also shared that she was doing “100% alternative and natural protocols and treatments” at the time.

Last October, she appeared on CNN and said her tumor had metastasized and her cancer had progressed to stage IV, and she had opted against the medical advice to do a double mastectomy.

“My plan at first was to get out the excessive toxins in my body. I felt like my body was intelligent; I know that to be true. Our bodies are brilliantly made,” Lewis said. “I decided to keep my tumor and try to work it out of my body a different way. . . . I wish I could go back. It’s important for me to admit where I went wrong with this.”

In an essay in Essence earlier this year, Lewis advocated for prevention and early detection.

Lewis was born in Los Angeles in 1973, and after graduating from Howard University in 1995, became a host on BET’s “Teen Summit” series, which got her noticed by MTV.

In 1997, she became one of the most popular hosts on the channel and interviewed the likes of Destiny’s Child, Britney Spears, NSYNC, and many more.

After she left the network in 2001, she hosted her own talk show, “The Ananda Lewis Show,” for one season.

In 2011, according to People Magazine, she welcomed one son, Langston, with Harry Smith, brother of Will Smith.
