Former 'Jurassic World' Star Talks About Possibly Returning to the Franchise

Published 5 days ago3 minute read

has become known for much more than just the movies, such as her work in the Star Wars franchise and roles as diverse as the TV series Black Mirror and the Twilight Saga, and she says that she's open to reprising her character in the dinosaur franchise created by Steven Spielberg in the early '90s. Howard portrayed park operations head Claire Dearing in the first three iterations of Jurassic World. However, given Universal Pictures' decision to fully reboot the Jurassic universe, Howard has stepped out. When asked if she's willing to return in the future, Howard says that she's "open," but also understands the franchise's new direction.

Howard spoke to Screen Rant to promote her new film, Deep Cover, an action comedy co-starring Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed. When addressing the Jurassic franchise, the actor/director expressed her excitement about seeing the new film Jurassic World Rebirth, which premieres in theaters July 2. She also said that she's open to returning in "20 years or something like that":

"I think that the door is always open. It was so cool with Dominion getting to have the legacy cast back and working in the franchise. But the most important thing is that this is a story about dinosaurs and what if dinosaurs and human beings coexisted? It is not about a specific set of characters.

"So, for myself as a fan, I am so excited for Jurassic World Rebirth. I'm going to be there in the theater opening day, and they have an amazing cast. I mean, Mahershala Ali, Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey. It's going to be absolutely fantastic. So I'm excited. And then maybe in 20 years or something like that, if they ever asked, of course, I would be back in a heartbeat, but I think they know what they're doing."

Jurassic World Dominion
Universal Pictures

2015's Jurassic World was not a bad movie at all, and it brought to life the mayhem that John Hammond failed to foresee with his initial idea. However, the sequels were less effective when executing the premise (domesticating raptors was not a popular part of the story). Yes, they were box office hits, but critics and audiences were divided. The inclusion of several legacy characters in the third film, Jurassic World Dominion, pleased some but led to a script that relied on nostalgia to make up for a weaker overall story. When speaking with People magazine, the actor hits the nail on the head when sharing her opinion on what the franchise is really about:

"I would definitely always come back as the character if that made sense. But I think it's really right for the franchise to take the story in a different direction. I mean, Jurassic has always been more about the dinosaurs than it's been about the human characters, and so I think it's wonderful."
