Fisherman's Blues is a laid-back trend for cool girls who love to be comfortable

Published 3 days ago4 minute read

Summer is synonymous with the shoreline so the popularity of nautical style as a recurring trend is unsurprising.

Each season it is revived as an enduring favourite for leisurely summer days. As a result, Chanel, Miu Miu, Marni, Prada and Tommy Hilfiger have all taken inspiration from the sea for their current summer collections.

This year however, the look is being sold with a twist as Fisherman-core, which highlights an earthier and more practical spin.

The trend was identified in the Pinterest Predicts report at the start of 2025 as a key fashion story and the prediction has proved prescient.

Celebrities including Katie Holmes, Gwyneth Paltrow and Alexa Chung have all been spotted channelling the relaxed trend.

Now, with holidays beckoning and the weather a touch unpredictable, it represents a perfect, low-key look for chilling out, whatever the conditions.

This rugged coastal aesthetic taps into the ongoing popularity of workwear and functional fashion which has seen the rise of chore jackets, chinos and wax coats.

Since Covid fashion has had an underlying preoccupation with comfort and Fisherman style is an evolution of that mood.

It is Coastal Grandmother but with a more masculine and utilitarian feel, and as such has parallels with the Gorpcore and cottagecore trends that have preceded it.

It channels maritime staples like cable knits, worn-in jeans, striped tops and shirts along with fisherman sandals and boat shoes in a natural colour palette of navy, soft blue and grey, khaki green, cream, taupe and brown in a style that is reassuringly easy to wear.

It puts comfort over chic: not that it isn’t stylish, but it is style with a small ‘s’ and a distinctly practical outlook as befits the inspiration behind it.

Fishermen are known for prioritising comfort and cosiness in their clothes and this trend honours that mood.

Aran-style knits and vests can be deployed to elevate easy linen trousers and skirts, while a striped marinière will make both blue and white jeans fresh and coastally appropriate.

Another key piece is a soft and slouchy shirt in a chalky stripe, or a striped waistcoat popped over a sporty vest top.

Easy striped cotton dresses or ocean-hued skirts can add a feminine feel while loose, soft shorts are a key piece. Everything should feel tactile and soft with a love worn and comforting texture.

Irish brand Magee have taken the theme as inspiration for their current collection with a range of lighter outerwear, casual shirts, soft tactile knits, and stripes in sea-blue hues to create styles deeply rooted in and inspired by the Donegal coastline.

Their Aisling shirt, €145, Molly double-breasted blazer, €450 and Saoirse double breasted coat, €425 are all ship-shape examples of coastal chic with a sense of timeless style.

Accessories also honour the fisherman theme with fish and seashell-inspired bags and jewellery as per Bottega Veneta’s viral Sardine bag.

Marks and Spencer’s shell jewellery is a cost-effective way to reference the trend as are the cute starfish and shell pieces from & Other Stories.
