Fire breaks out at Baldwinsville apartment building

BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — First responders were called to a fire at the New Legacy Apartments in Baldwinsville just before 10 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24.

The fire was well advanced before the Northwest Fire District arrived. Multiple people called the fire into 911.

The firefighters worked with the police to get everybody out of the building.

When NewsChannel 9 arrived on the scene, the fire had spread throughout the building and the roof was collapsed.

Firefighters faced challenging conditions due to cold temperatures. Flares were used to defrost the fire hydrants and at least 60 extra volunteer firefighters were called in to assist with the scene.

“Everything gets really icy quick we have a lot of additional man power in there due to the cold. Just so we could rotate crews out because you get in there working and you come out and it’s not what it was inside so we just like to get them in and rewarm back up,” Northwest Fire District Deputy Fire Chief Derek Natoli said.

At least one person was sent to the hospital. Their condition is unknown.

The investigation into what caused the fire is ongoing.

The Red Cross opened a shelter at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena for those who lost their homes in the fire. 24 apartment units were heavily damaged due to the fire.

The Baldwinsville Central School District will collect donations for the families impacted by the fire on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 26 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the District Operations Building.
